When Cora Seaborne's controlling husband dies, she enters her new life as a widow with both relief and sadness.
Together with his son Francis, a curious and obsessive boy, he leaves the city to go to Essex, hoping that the fresh air and open space will provide him with shelter.
Upon her arrival, rumours come that the mythical Essex snake, once said to roam the marshes claiming lives, has returned to the coastal parish of Aldwinter.
Cora, an amateur naturalist with no patience for superstition, is captivated, convinced that what local people think is a magical beast may be an undiscovered species.
As he sets off, he is introduced to William Ransome, the vicar of Aldwinter, who is also deeply suspicious of rumors, but thinks they are a distraction from the true faith.
While trying to calm their parishioners, Will and Cora enter into an intense relationship, and although they don't agree on anything at all, they find themselves both reunited and torn, affecting each other in a way that surprises both of them.
The Essex Snake is a celebration of love, and the many different forms it can take.
